Patience...

Patience…

Sailing is an exercise in patience. You can’t necessarily pick up and leave on demand and if the winds aren’t in your favor, our perceived control in life goes off the stern! I know, CORNY! We’ve been waiting 5 days for favorable winds to sail south and it’s looking like Christmas might be the day! A nice north-east wind is in the forecast for the next several days. Waiting is when you take those opportunities to go into town, read, swim or just hang out.

We’re anchored in a beautiful canal in Naples but we’re far enough away from town that it takes an hour each way to get there and back. We made a decision to leave our outboard for the dinghy behind and row instead. It’s a wonderful way to get exercise, we don’t have to carry gasoline and we’re not adding more pollutants to the ocean. Mark usually rows into town and I row back. With a busy channel we’re usually fighting wake along with current and wind but I love it!

Talk about patience! Wifi and data usage has been an even bigger challenge. We had excellent wifi service at Bob and Alicia’s but other than that, it’s been very inconsistent. Wifi was available at the boatyard where Tarwathie was dry-docked but it was almost impossible to use. There weren’t Starbucks or places near by where one could get online easily. In daily life it appears wifi is everywhere but it’s more of a challenge when you’re on a boat. It would have been easy to leave it all behind…maybe next time.

We did make it to Naples fine library and took advantage of it by posting our last blog, but it took 2 hours to get there from the time we left the boat. Basically, wifi is around but not always accessible. I’ve increased my data plan for my iPhone but when it’s gone and depending where in my billing cycle that might be, there could be a long silence so don’t think the worst, just assume I’m out of data.
